EQ STRUC was engaged to perform a detailed seismic assessment and retrofit concept for the historic unreinforced clay brick masonry building at 80 Wyllie Road, Auckland. The building was constructed in 1923 and the complex was formerly known as Orphan Home and Mangere Hospital.
The administration block is part of the St John’s Home Complex which is listed with the New Zealand Historic Places Trust – Pouhere Taonga as Category I structures. Category I is given to places of special or outstanding historical or cultural heritage significance or value.
Significant aspects of the project included:
- On-site testing including GPR scanning, bed joint shear tests, brick and mortar laboratory testing and opening up of reinforced concrete elements to identify reinforcement details.
- 3D structural analysis of the building.
- Cost effective retrofit concept to 67%NBS.
